The Soil and Water Outcomes Fund today announced it has been engaged by Nutrien Ag Solutions™ to assist with the deployment of Soil and Water Outcomes Fund pilots beginning in 2021. In these pilots, the Soil and Water Outcomes Fund will provide compensation to growers implementing sustainable agricultural practices that enhance carbon sequestration and improve water quality. The pilots will be targeting growers in areas of Illinois, Ohio, and the Chesapeake region. This partnership is part of the early field work associated with Nutrien’s recently announced comprehensive carbon program, which is being designed to provide support for growers to drive sustainable agriculture and boost profitability.

“We are pleased to partner with Nutrien to design opportunities for growers to earn revenue by enhancing sustainability on their farms through the addition of new conservation farming practices beneficial to the environment,” said Adam Kiel, managing director of the Soil and Water Outcomes Fund and executive vice president of AgOutcomes. “Growers are stewards of working lands, and we look forward to our partnership with Nutrien as we collaborate in implementing these pilot projects.”

“The Soil and Water Outcomes Fund’s delivers verifiable environmental impact through an innovative public-private partnership that we believe is scalable and replicable across key agricultural regions in the United States,” said Mark Lambert, managing director of the Soil and Water Outcomes Fund and CEO of ReHarvest Partners.

In 2021, working with Nutrien and others, the Soil and Water Outcomes Fund plans to expand to at least 100,000 acres of cropland across Iowa, Ohio, and Illinois, significantly increasing opportunities for growers to be compensated for implementing conservation practices and the production of verified environmental outcomes.

Nutrien Ag Solutions is the first agriculture retailer to engage the Soil and Water Outcomes Fund. Nutrien joins Cargill, who initially partnered with the Outcomes Fund in April 2020. Both Nutrien and Cargill have recently announced their increased commitment to aid growers in producing positive environmental outcomes, which included focuses on mitigating climate change, regenerating soils, improving water quality and usage, and sequestering carbon.

The Soil and Water Outcomes Fund is a partnership of AgOutcomes, a subsidiary of the Iowa Soybean Association, and ReHarvest Partners, a subsidiary of Quantified Ventures. The Outcomes Fund uses leading models and approaches to quantify carbon sequestration and water outcomes and provides technical assistance to aid growers on their journey to increase profitability through sustainability. AgOutcomes leads the agronomic and farmer relations elements of the operation and ReHarvest Partners manages the financial and contracting aspects of the Soil and Water Outcomes Fund.

The Soil and Water Outcomes Fund provides financial incentives directly to growers who transition to on-farm conservation practices such as no till and cover crops that yield outcomes like increased carbon sequestration and water quality improvement. The resulting verified environmental outcomes are sold to a diverse group of public and private customers that benefit from them, including corporations like Nutrien, municipalities, state departments of agriculture, and the federal government.
